ONLINE CHESS ADDICTION

I think that as Lichess popularity grows, it's developers should be considering the social aspects and consequences of this activity.

The developers aren't responsible for the habits of their users.
Hmmm... I might not be the best person to comment on this but I think a lot the addicts generally play fast blitz or bullet games mindlessly and dont make a lot of progress in chess understanding.

I dont think theres anything wrong with having a passion for chess. or wanting to improve. but if you're just playing mindlessly with no progression or improvement obsessively .then it might be a problem.

What do you expect of them? Do you want them to implement usage timers which warn the user that they're playing too much chess? Do you want them to send an email and ask if everything is okay in their life? Should frequent users have to provide evidence that they're eating well and being "socially responsible"? Or should a bedtime ban be enforced around 21:00?

And how many marriages actually ended because a spouse was addicted to chess? How can you hold an online chess host responsible for such ridiculous exceptions? The only thing the developers can be held accountable for is the existence and function of the site, they simply are not responsible for the personal lives of their users.

If you feel you need to campaign about this, why not try facebook or twitter instead?

You can become addicted to sugar, but fizzy drink companies don't give warnings.

You can become addicted to books - bibliomania, for example, but books and publishers don't give warnings that reading could ruin marriages.

You can become addicted to exercise, but gym's don't warn you about that either.

You can also become addicted to water, but I've never heard of Evian telling you to drink in moderation.

"I dont think theres anything wrong with having a passion for chess. or wanting to improve. but if you're just playing mindlessly with no progression or improvement obsessively .then it might be a problem. " ← exactly.

I don't like to play with obsessive players because: 1) they don't make any effort to play rationally 2) they get all emotional when they are losing (e.g. NEVER accept Takeback) 3) they're prone to cheat.
What point are you ultimately trying to make, leck_meine_eier?
Actually I wanted to delete this post but couldn't find the "button". Then someone replied and I just went along with it.
