Top 10 Variants Ranked
Top 10 variants from Lichess and that other website rankedRanking:-
1. Standard
This is by far my favourite and main variant. All rules of chess apply.
2. Fog Of War
This is a fun variant of chess where you can only see squares that your pieces can 'see.' The goal is to capture the opponent's king (yes, it is legal). It is almost like blindfolded but easier. Stronger players will definitely enjoy this more as this is quite a challenge. It is a fun variant overall.
3. Atomic
In this variant pieces explode when capture blowing up the capturing piece, the captured piece and all pieces (not pawns) near it. It is extremely chaotic, with explosions all over the place and kings being able to touch each other. There are traps everywhere and almost all mistakes are fatal.
4. BugHouse Doubles
In this variant you have a teammate who plays against your opponent's teammate. You can revive pieces captured by your team-mate and vice versa. A fun game, with one downside: If one side loses, you lose.
5. Chess960 (Fischer Random)
This is basically standard chess but the pieces are rearranged in their home ranks. Fun to play.
6. Racing Kings
The first one to bring their king to the 8th rank wins. Checks are illegal, and this is a theoretical variant. It is enjoyable, and requires little knowledge of chess itself.
7. Crazyhouse
Basically bughouse singles. Not as fun as the original bughouse to me, but less dependant on luck (getting a good teammate doesn't matter).
8. Three Check
Your goal is to deliver three checks. There are exciting sacrifices and tactics, and tons of checks. Violent, chaotic and somewhat fun.
9. Automate
Arrange the pieces and let the engine play it out. Great for lazy folks, like me. Arrangement is everything here.
10. Horde
There are two sides, the pawns, and the pieces. It's a very fun game in my opinion. To win, black must capture all pawns and white must checkmate the king.
There are more variants but I will include those in later blogs. See ya.
