Internet chess and the downfall of the chess club...

I realize that today there are probably more chess players walking the Earth than any other time in history. This makes me feel not only very lucky to have so many people to play with but also sad at the same time. Why? Because when I starting playing chess computers weren't what they are today. Few people had them and the internet chess community was in it's infancy.

I, like most chess players 15+ years ago had to get dressed and go to my local chess club. My fondest memories and what led me to become a lifelong chess enthusiast stem from the interactions with the people I met there. In those days my chess club had a huge active roster of players and it was not unusual to have 15 games going at once on a Friday night and sometimes on a Wednesday afternoon. There would be arguments in one corner, kids pouring over puzzles in another, the smell of coffee, and the clack of analog clocks in every direction.

We would discuss everything from politics, religion, race, sexuality, and whatever else. To me it was a social club as much as a chess club. But now that same building that is still in operation today is dying. Not because of lack of funding, or lack of chess players in the area, but because nowadays internet chess has become the norm and the club, something lower on the list. During the week we have maybe 5 people and on a Friday night, 15 if we are lucky.

I'm glad that the internet chess scene has become what it has. I play on this site daily. But I still drag myself to the club every Friday night to hang with friends that have become like family and remember where chess started and what it really is. You never wonder if your opponent cheated, you can play touch move, you have to call your opponents time, and yes, you even get to snatch the occasional king.

I know I'm being nostalgic. I just hope somebody reads this and remembers that maybe they have a place near them where they can experience what I did. Take your kids, bring a six pack, go just to watch or to play 2 games. Bring back the real chess community before it's gone.
I am totally with you. Fridaynight at the chess club is a must since more then twenty years now. And in my region here i also see the falling numbers auf active players. But that is not only a chess problem. As i was a kid we had 5 youth teams at the lokal football club. Nowadays it one team with 2 other clubs putting there players together. And football in germany is total other category then chess but the problem with the young people is the same. And if you see that chess even has an advantage because you can it play over the internet.
Unfortunately I didnt have the chance to experience this, I am 21 and started playing chess not long ago (few months) via self-teaching. But after reading this article, I really have the desire to find some local chess club (if there is any in my small town) and visit them. Even though its nice to be able to play on the internet, I miss someone who I can play in real life, with real chessboard and wooden pieces. Thank you for this beautiful post inkspot.
You're welcome and I'm glad it inspired you. And if there isn't a club in your community, I bet there are chess players. Seek them out. Experience it. There is nothing like being able to look your opponent in the eye as their position crumbles. A satisfaction only over the board can give.

In my community we have a family run convenience store. One of the guys who has been working there forever always has a set under the counter and will play anybody who asks. I only know this because I happened to go by on a day this was going on. In a way, that place was a chess club. No set schedule, nothing official about it, but people still met there to play chess. I bet if you find the people, find a place to meet, if there isn't already a club, maybe it will just form.
____ BRAVO inkspot! An important message beautifully expressed. When I first began reading I thought you must be European.... Where in the US did you find a chess club?? Brooklyn, Queens, Chicago, North Jersey???
____ I can only imagine how much fun that would be... I have tried in several different threads to convey that the sociability of chess is the key to my enjoyment. Come to think of it, without the chat box and forums, I probably would have played 260 games instead of 26xx.
______________ Thanks for a great discussion subject
I'm from St. Petersburg, FL. The home of the oldest contiguously same site operated chess club in the country. No, not the most prestigious, but we have a good thing going and I don't want it to die. That article I wrote came from my heart for that reason alone. Because I do miss those days and I know there are people out there who play and love the game but at the same time can count on one hand the number of occasions they've actually played somebody in person. I just want to let people know these places exist and inspire them to seek them out or create them.
We did get this going in my neighborhood bar for awhile -- there was a small set behind the bar and we enhanced our happy hour
If anybody else has fond memories of a chess club or gathering they'd like to share, please do.
I never had the pleasure of visiting a Chess club, nor is there one nearby where I live ... without Online Chess, I'd be doing something productive right now - but thank God that has been averted! :)

Maybe libraries will be one day a thing of the past too, but that's called progress.
